Award Structure

Our goal is to find up-and-coming young talent, from a range of motorsport series and educational institutions, from across Canada, that promote a positive, fun, and fair competitive environment and foster their progression to a career in motorsports.

By demonstrating proper conduct, sportsmanship, discipline, and appearance, we are committed to helping shape the future of these young Canadian’s motorsport prospects.

To identify these young athletes, CMA follows a well-defined and defendable process to make their selections for viable candidates.

The three potential levels for participation as a potential Academy member are as follows:

Junior Academy Drivers

To offer support to young drivers, the following Opportunity will be available, through these steps, for those who are Aged 8 to 14.

Step One:Drivers will Register on the CMA website, indicating their interest in being considered by the CMA Selection Committee as a potential Junior Academy Driver.

CMA will only accept applications from drivers who are aged 8 to 14, as of February 1st of each season, and are Canadian citizens or hold landed immigrant status.
Step Two:The CMA Selection Committee will evaluate each application and invite the selected candidates to submit a more detailed application, including a video presentation, describing “Why They Should Be Considered for a Position as a Junior Academy Member”.

Through their short video candidates will be asked to share details about their racing activities and their goals for the future in racing and life. These videos will be reviewed by the CMA Selection Committee and will form a large part of the committee’s selection criteria.
Step Three:The selected candidates will then be invited to meet to the CMA Selection Committee, in person or via Zoom – based on their geographic location, for final consideration.
Step Four:The selected candidates will be confirmed and Welcomed to the Team as “Junior Academy Drivers” and invited to attend a Full Day Seminar, at one of three locations in Canada, to participate in a Training Camp focusing on such topics as:

  • Fitness
  • Personal Marketing
  • Sponsorship Development
  • Mental Preparation
  • Driving Dynamics
  • Building a Career in Motorsport

A minimum number of selected drivers, each season, will not be guaranteed, however selected applicants will not exceed a total of ten participants. No representation in any age group will be predetermined and candidates will be considered from both male and female applicants.

These Junior Team Members will then carry to Academy Driver Branding throughout the following motorsport season and will be monitored by the Selection Committee for the actions throughout the year – with a view to them continuing to maintain their Membership status for the following year.

Senior Academy Drivers
Step One:Drivers will Register on the CMA website, indicating their interest in being considered by the CMA Selection Committee as a potential Senior Academy Driver.

CMA will accept applications from only drivers who are aged 15 to 20, as of February 1st of each season, and are Canadian citizens or hold landed immigrant status.
Step Two:The CMA Selection Committee will then evaluate each application and invite the selected candidates to submit a more detailed application, including a video presentation describing “Why They Should Be Considered for a Position as an Academy Member”.

Through their application, drivers must demonstrate why they are deserving of a place in CMA, through their individual driving performance results, their passion for the sport, their focus and drive to succeed, and most importantly their values and philosophies in life. They must also demonstrate proper grades with their schooling (if applicable ) and have demonstrated sportsmanship and leadership in all that they do.

Step Four:The selected candidates will then be confirmed as “Senior Academy Drivers” and invited to attend an all-expenses paid CMA Training Camp at Buttonwillow Raceway Park, California, in November or December of each year.

All confirmed Academy Drivers will then go through a comprehensive range of off and on-track training sessions:

The off-track sessions will include:

Fitness – these sessions will be led by a motorsport fitness expert and will include a daily work out at the team’s workshop in Buttonwillow Raceway Park and will include how to train properly prior to and during the season. They will also deal with nutrition, sleep, and how to stay fit and healthy on a race weekend and throughout the full season.

Marketing – these sessions will be conducted by Alastair Taylor of Road to Success Management (RSM) and will cover topics such as Branding, On-line Personal Marketing, Social Media and how to create Sponsorship Proposals, Interacting with Sponsors, Officials, and Other Drivers and How to Make Yourself Standout in the Motorsport Paddock.

Mental Preparation – these highly important personal sessions will be conducted by Ronn Langford, and will cover Belief Systems, Personal Strategies for Performance, and Techniques for Overcoming Mental Hurdles.

Motorsport Engineering – these sessions will be conducted by (TBA), one of the leading race engineering professionals in the industry and will cover the engineering principles that apply to motorsport and how a driver should work with this support resource to improve their success and speed.

Data Acquisition – these sessions will teach drivers the basics of data acquisition, what to look for and how to use to use data as a tool for success.

Driving Dynamics – this session will cover the basics of Driving Dynamics, Race Strategies, Race Craft and How to Win Races and will be conducted by Danny Kok.

Upon arrival in California, all participates will be provided with CMA teamwear for the event and will be shuttled to and from the airport, track, hotel, and restaurants.

Each driver under the age of 16 will be required to attend with a parent or gradian (who will attend at their own expense). Drivers from 16 to 18 will also be allowed a parent or gradian, if requested (again at their own expense), however, drivers from 18 to 20 will be required to travel on their own.

These “At Track” sessions will take place at Buttonwillow Raceway Park, where the participants will get the opportunities to drive some of JMF Motorsports racing vehicles.

These vehicles could include:

  • Mercedes – AMG GT4
  • GR86 Cars
  • 125 cc Shifter Kart
  • Rotax Kart

These vehicles are all part of the JMF Motorsports fleet of race vehicles and some of which may be used for the following race season, for actual drive seat opportunities, for particular selected candidates.

During the track program days, there will be a professional photographer on site to document each drivers’ activities and to help provide photos and video footage for the candidates to use in their social media, sponsorship packages and as a souvenir of this exciting opportunity.

A minimum number of selected drivers, each season, will not be guaranteed, however selected applicants will not exceed a total of ten participants. No representation in any age group will be predetermined and candidates will be considered from both male and female applicants.

These Senior Team Members will then carry Academy Driver Branding throughout the following motorsport season and will be monitored by the Selection Committee for the actions throughout the year – with a view to them continuing to maintain their Membership status for the following year.

Academy Co-Op Team Members
In an effort to also provide young College and University students with co-op placement opportunities to work and participate on a Professional Race Team, with a view to potentially working in the motorsport industry after graduation, CMA will work with higher education institutions to provide these opportunities to selected students.

As with the driver programs, applicants will be asked to follow a series of steps to be considered as follows:

Step One:Applicants will Register on the CMA website, indicating their interest in being considered by the CMA Selection Committee for a Co-op Position with one of the JMF Motorsports teams.

CMA will only accept applications from applicants who are currently attending an accredited higher education institution, in one of the course curriculum applicable to motorsport and are Canadian citizens or hold landed immigrant status.

These curriculums include, but are not limited to:

  • Engineering
  • Mechanics
  • Marketing
  • Public Relations
  • Digital Marketing
  • Administration

Step Two:The CMA Selection Committee will evaluate each application and invite the selected candidates to submit a more detailed application, including a video presentation describing “Why They Should Be Considered for a Position as a Co-op Field Placement Participant”.

Through their application, applicants must demonstrate why they are deserving of a place in CMA Co-op Program, through their individual educational performance, their passion for the sport, their focus on a potential career in motorsports, and most importantly their values and philosophies in life. These videos will be reviewed by the CMA Selection Committee and will form a large part of the committee’s selection criteria.
Step Three:The selected candidates will then be invited to meet to the CMA Selection Committee, in person or via Zoom – based on their geographic location, for final consideration.
Step Four:The selected candidates will then be confirmed as an “Academy Co-Op Team Member” and invited to spend the race season with one of the JMF Motorsports Teams.

Each season JMF Motorsports may provide opportunities for partially or fully funded JMF Motorsports team car rides. The opportunities could be available in the following series:

  • IMSA GT4 series
  • SRO Pirelli GT4 America series

#seasonsponsor #kartingsponsor #supportingyoungracers #canadianmotorsportsWe would like to take a moment to acknowledge our MIKA Race day sponsor for MIKA Race 1, 2 and 3! The Canadian Motorsports Academy (CMA) will be supporting MIKA and the Mosport Karting Centre as a headline sponsor for the remainder of the 2024 season.

The CMA is the truest form of an Academy specifically for Motorsport in Canada – where its Members are taught all aspects of their chosen profession in motorsports – not just including Drivers, but Engineers, Mechanics, Press Representatives, Marketing Professionals and Team Managers.

However, at this time, the programs main focus is on providing young drivers with the support required to make it to the highest echelons of motorsport. The Academy is focused on identifying, educating, mentoring, and coaching young racing drivers and providing them with a defined and supported pathway from junior supporting classes into professional GT racing.
